Canadian Overseas Petroleum to re-evaluate after Liberia well fails
Canadian Overseas Petroleum Limited (LON:COPL) is having to take stock after drilling results from its highly-anticipated exploration well offshore Liberia disappointed.
The recent drill tests carried out at the Mesurado-1 well by owner and oil super major ExxonMobil failed to find any hydrocarbons.
The well, which sits in the LB-13 Block, will be plugged and abandoned, with no further logging operations conducted.
“We are naturally disappointed by the lack of hydrocarbons in the targeted reservoir sands in the Mesurado-1 well,” said COPL chief executive Arthur Millholland.
“The lack of hydrocarbons at this location where our seismic data presented attributes indicative of hydrocarbons will cause us to do additional work on the 3D seismic over the block, and re-evaluate the other leads we have mapped on LB-13.”
Mesurado-1 is located some 50 miles from the Liberian coast and is in 2,500 metres of water.
Before today’s news, the target had been estimated to host 1.78bn to 4.2bn of gross prospective recoverable oil resources.
COPL owns a 17% stake in the exploration project, though its share of the drilling costs is covered by Exxon.
Analysts still upbeat on COPL nonetheless
The company’s focus will now turn to its “attractive” oil project offshore Nigeria, where appraisal drilling is slated to start towards the end of 2017.
“This is clearly a setback for COPL, however the company is well diversified with an attractive oil appraisal and development project offshore Nigeria on OPL 226,” said Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Sam Wahab.
Wahab also reckons that there is the possibility for COPL’s partners to drill a further exploration well at Liberia given the falling rig costs associated with the project.
The analyst still has the stock as a ‘buy’, although he has reduced the target price to 11p.
Shares plummeted in early deals, falling 78% to 1.75p.

Samsung Galaxy S8 to come with 'Siri rival'
Samsung Electronics said on Sunday it would launch an artificial intelligence digital assistant service for its upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone, seeking to rebound from the Galaxy Note 7's collapse and differentiate its devices.
The world's top smartphone maker in October announced the acquisition of Viv Labs, a firm run by a co-creator of Apple's Siri voice assistant programme. Samsung plans to integrate the San Jose-based company's AI platform, called Viv, into the Galaxy smartphones and expand voice-assistant services to home appliances and wearable technology devices.
Samsung is counting on the Galaxy S8 to help revive smartphone momentum after the discontinuation of fire-prone Galaxy Note 7s, which will hit its profit by $5.4 billion over three quarters through the first quarter of 2017. Investors and analysts say the Galaxy S8 must be a strong device in order for Samsung to win back customers and revive earnings momentum.
Samsung did not comment on what types of services would be offered through the AI assistant that will be launched on the Galaxy S8, which is expected to go on sale early next year. It said the AI assistant would allow customers to use third-party service seamlessly.
"Developers can attach and upload services to our agent," said Samsung executive vice president Rhee In-jong during a briefing, referring to its AI assistant.
"Even if Samsung doesn't do anything on its own, the more services that get attached the smarter this agent will get, learn more new services and provide them to end-users with ease."
Technology firms are locked in an increasingly heated race to make AI good enough to let consumers interact with their devices more naturally, especially via voice.
Alphabet's Google is widely considered to be the leader in AI, but others including Amazon.com, Apple and Microsoft have launched their own offerings including voice-powered digital assistants.

Apple sets 'condition' to open manufacturing plant in India
US-based iPhone maker Apple has sought incentives from the government to set up a manufacturing unit in the country.
In a communication to the government, the Cupertino-based technology major has asked for incentives related to the Department of Revenue and Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeITY), an official told .
"They are doing their due diligence from quite some time. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) will write to both the departments regarding this communication for their views," the official added.
At present, to boost electronic manufacturing in the country, the government provides benefits under Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (MSIPS).
The scheme provides financial incentives to offset disability and attract investments in the electronics hardware segment. It also gives subsidy for investments in Special Economic Zones, among other benefits.
Currently, Apple's products are manufactured in six countries including Korea, Japan and the US.
Apple's communication regarding setting up of a manufacturing unit assumes significance as the Finance Ministry in May had rejected relaxing the 30% domestic sourcing norms, as sought by the iPhone and iPad maker as a pre-condition for bringing in FDI to set up single-brand retail stores in the country.
The company had sought exemption on the ground that it makes state-of-the-art and cutting-edge technology products for which local sourcing is not possible.
The government had also turned down the firm's proposal to import refurbished phones and sell them in India.
The company sells its products through Apple-owned retail stores in countries like China, Germany, the US, the UK and France, among others.
It has no wholly-owned store in India and sells its products through distributors such as Redington and Ingram Micro.
The government has announced incentives to promote electronic manufacturing in India and reduce the import bill.
Total import of electronics goods were valued at Rs 2.25 lakh crore in 2014-15 as against Rs 1.95 lakh crore in the previous year.

India's IT industry needs to be more innovative: Vice president Hamid Ansari
India's IT industry would need to be more innovative to cope up with the future challenges as clients would look for "innovative partners" rather than "software partners", vice president Hamid Ansari said after the inauguration of the new headquarters of Nasscom in Noida's Sector 126.
Backing the recommendation of an expert committee by NITI Aayog, which suggested the setting up of an 'Innovation Mission', he said that there is a lot of churn happening in the IT industry and companies will have to do a lot to address challenges put forward by cloud computing, evolution in software and service models, digital disruption and shrinking manpower needs because of software evolution.
Quoting a recent Nasscom-McKinsey report "Perspective 2025: Shaping the Digital Revolution", he said that the industry is well on track to grow from $132 billion in 2014-15 to $225 billion by 2020 and further touch $350 billion by 2025.
"Even with the growth trajectory so well charted, below the calm waters, there is lot of churn happening as well and companies will have to do a lot to address the challenges as well," he said as he enumerated the challenges in the short and intermediate terms including cloud computing, evolution in software and service models, need to develop products, digital disruption and shrinking manpower needs because of software evolution.
Ansari told a gathering of Nasscom employees and young entrepreneurs that the future growth of our IT industry will be in being able to create futuristic business scenarios and engineering digital disruption rather than coping with its effects. "In short, you will have to be more innovative," he said.
Quoting former RBI governor who shared the idea of an "idea factory" at an event at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi last year, he said that a scientific temper and a conducive social ambience, is required for development of revolutionary ideas.
"The former RBI governor listed out some of the ways for a nation to keep the idea factory open. That is the operative word. He suggested that the first essential is to foster competition in the market place for ideas by encouraging challenge to all authority and tradition an extremely difficult thing to do in our environment," he said. Even while acknowledging that the only way of dismissing any view is through empirical tests, imposition of a particular view of an ideology is ruled out and all ideas are subject to critical examination, he added.
"The second essential, according to him (Rajan) is protection not of specific ideas and traditions but the right to question and challenge, the right to behave differently, so long as it does not hurt others seriously. In this protection lies societal self-interest for it is by encouraging the challenge of innovative rebels that society develops," he said.

Microsoft’s new speech recognition system reaches human parity
A team of researchers and engineers in Microsoft AI and Research created a speech recognition system that makes the same or fewer errors than professional transcriptionists
In a major breakthrough in speech recognition, researchers at Microsoft claim to have developed the first technology that recognises the words in a conversation as well as humans do. A team of researchers and engineers in Microsoft Artificial Intelligence and Research created a speech recognition system that makes the same or fewer errors than professional transcriptionists. They reported a word error rate (WER) of 5.9 per cent, down from the 6.3 per cent WER the team reported just last month. The 5.9 per cent error rate is about equal to that of people who were asked to transcribe the same conversation, and it is the lowest ever recorded against the industry standard Switchboard speech recognition task.
“We’ve reached human parity. This is a historic achievement,” Xuedong Huang, the company’s chief speech scientist said in a blog post.
The milestone means that, for the first time, a computer can recognise the words in a conversation as well as a person would. In doing so, the team beat a goal they set less than a year ago – and greatly exceeded everyone else’s expectations as well. The research milestone comes after decades of research in speech recognition, beginning in the early 1970s with DARPA, the US agency tasked with making technology breakthroughs. Over the decades, most major technology companies and many research organisations joined in the pursuit.
“This accomplishment is the culmination of over twenty years of effort,” said Geoffrey Zweig, who manages the Speech and Dialog research group.
The milestone will have broad implications for consumer and business products that can be significantly augmented by speech recognition. That includes consumer entertainment devices like the Xbox, accessibility tools such as instant speech-to-text transcription and personal digital assistants such as Cortana.
“This will make Cortana more powerful, making a truly intelligent assistant possible,” Shum said.
The research milestone does not mean the computer recognised every word perfectly. In fact, humans do not do that, either. Instead, it means that the error rate – or the rate at which the computer misheard a word like “have” for “is” or “a” for “the” – is the same as you would expect from a person hearing the same conversation.
Zweig attributed the accomplishment to the systematic use of the latest neural network technology in all aspects of the system. The push that got the researchers over the top was the use of neural language models in which words are represented as continuous vectors in space, and words like “fast” and “quick” are close together. “This lets the models generalise very well from word to word,” Zweig said.
Flipkart, Amazon use offline play to expand business
At a time when some TV and white goods brands have objected to deep discounting on e-commerce sites during the festive season, Flipkart and Amazon are rushing into the online-to-offline (O2O) channel by tying up with the likes of Samsung to address a wider range of prospective shoppers.
Both these companies have started building their omni-channel network in tier I cities in partnership with consumer durables and electronics manufacturers to cater to a set of buyers who want to get a 'touch and feel' experience before making online purchases.
Flipkart has partnered with Samsung for its appliances business across 50 stores and is expected to expand this alliance. "O2O model brings the best of both worlds to the customer where convenience of e-commerce is backed by quick deliveries from next-door retail stores. The brand store becoming a seller on Flipkart is a massive testimony to the fact that people are doing their research and discovery of consumer electronics and appliances on Flipkart," said Sandeep Karwa, head (consumer electronics and appliances) at Flipkart. "We are aggressively focusing on expanding this with other key brands," he said.
Like Flipkart, Amazon, too, has entered into a partnership with Samsung. The initiative is live in 41 Samsung brand stores across 25 cities for large appliances, smartphones and electronics, a company spokesperson said in an emailed response.
The Seattle-headquartered online retailer already has a pilot running with telecom operator Vodafone where customers can try out various aspects of a smartphone and make their purchase online from the store itself.. Under project Udaan,Amazon's been pushing assisted retail in tier II and tier III towns to get consumers used to the idea of buying online. When contacted, Samsung did not respond to a query on these tie-up with online retailers.
While it is still early days for e-commerce companies adopting an omni-channel play, it is yet another attempt being made by these e-tailers who are striving hard to broaden the digital shopping universe which has been stagnant at about 50-60 million. Other vertical online retailers such as eye-wear firm Lenskart , furniture e-tailer Pepperfry, and baby products seller Firstcry, have all been building their offline presence.
Flipkart owned fashion focused e-tailer Myntra is also expected to open its offline store by end of the year in Bengaluru as it looks to push its private brands through these outlets. The omni-channel strategy is also being druven by a wave of traditional retailers like Arvind group's Nnnow.com.
